Crouwer's 'cross-media' works frequently combine apocalyptic, mythological and Romantic imagery, often of the sorts and sources frequently appropriated by underground music and visual culture. And, indeed the configuration of the works frequently scrutinizes the question of physical space and time in relation to the enduring image; film becomes a performance; a photograph refuses to clarify whether it is a registration or something looking to painting; music and sound transmute the literary or textual sources to which some of the imagery alludes, itself already appropriated in rock music iconography. Next to her artwork Alexandra Crouwers also works as a writer and a d.j. [excerpt text: Ken Pratt]
In my work I more and more tend to investigate space as a representation of a thought- or rather a believe-system. The works are rarely an entity in their own, they become part of that space. In this context I'm extremely interested in the origin of art and culture within human evolution. Cave art, temples and cathedrals (and shrines) are regarded as multi-media installations. The boundaries between what's 'real' - the world outside of our heads - and what's fiction - what's going on in our minds, become diffuse.
I use animation, virtual 3D models, (mural) drawings, computerimaging, soundtracks and light to control an environment that's based on the conventions of 40.000 years of image-making and -presentation. Symbols and archetypes that find their origins in myths and individual imagination. My work is becoming an attempt to close the time gap between the prehistoric artists and our own concept of contemporary art.
